About NMT Baja
The NMT Mini Baja Team has existed for over twenty years and has had some success in the competition. The team is currently comprised of junior and senior mechanical engineering design students taking part in the NMT design clinic. The team of students breaks the vehicle into five areas: Frame, Suspension, Driver Controls, Drivetrain, and Brakes. Each group has two to three students who work to design, model and construct their portion of the vehicle. The team uses SolidWorks to model and test their design ideas before fabrication. The team works on fabricating and testing their vehicle in the Baja shop, located behind the NMT golf course driving range.
The 2015-2016 New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology Baja SAE® Team plans to accomplish a number of tasks over the course of the year, which will lead to the final goal of competing with a well-engineered vehicle in the 2016 Baja SAE California competition in May.
The goals will be split up over the course of the fall 2015 and spring 2016 academic semesters. In the fall 2015 semester, developing innovative conceptual and final designs with sound engineering practice will be a top priority. By the middle of November, fabrication will begin with a working vehicle expected by March 14th . From March to May 2016, testing of the vehicle will be performed to verify designs and check how the team has done with meeting their design specifications and goals for the vehicle.

About SAE Baja
Baja SAE® is a competition held by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) that challenges student members with designing and manufacturing tasks, which arise when introducing a new product to the consumer industrial market. Teams spend the academic year designing and fabricating a rugged, single seat, off-road recreational vehicle for a non-professional weekend off-road enthusiast. The teams then come together at the end of the year to present their designs and compete against other universities in various events. The goal for each team in the competition is to have their design chosen for manufacturing by a fictitious firm, which is represented by the judges of the competition.
Potential Members
The NMT Baja Team is willing to talk with interested students from all different types of majors. While the team is currently comprised only of mechanical engineering students, anyone is welcome. If interested in joining or receiving more information please contact the team lead, Kevin, at [email protected].
